01 / Sector   Learning & Development

Train people inside the real workplace before they set foot in it.

Twinflow turns your sites, plant rooms, wards, labs and campuses into walkable, measurable digital twins that become training environments in their own right. Inductions, procedures, safety drills and expert knowledge, all placed exactly where the work happens and open to every learner from a browser or headset.

02 / The problem Why training stalls

Training budgets are shrinking, while the skills people need are tied ever more closely to a specific place.

£53bn
spent by UK employers on training in 2024, down from £59bn in 2022 in real terms
£1,700
average training spend per employee, down from £1,960 two years earlier
29.5%
real-terms fall in training spend per employee since 2011
27%
of UK vacancies are skill-shortage vacancies, where applicants lack the skills the role needs
4x
faster completion for immersive VR learners compared with classroom training
275%
more confident to act on what they learned, for VR learners in the same study

Most workplace training still happens in a classroom, on a slide deck, or by shadowing whoever has time. New starters learn the layout of a plant, a ward or a depot by walking it, often while it is live. Contractors arrive for a first day of induction before they can do anything useful. Safety drills are run once a year, if the site can afford the disruption.

Meanwhile the people who really know the building are retiring, moving on or stretched across too many sites. Their knowledge lives in their heads and in out-of-date PDFs. Every time a layout changes, the training material falls further behind the place it is meant to describe.

03 / What it does

A walkable copy of your real workplace, built to teach people how it works.

A training twin is a photorealistic, dimensionally accurate replica of the place your people will work in, opened in a browser, on a tablet or in a headset. New starters can find the fire assembly point before their first shift. Engineers can locate an isolation valve and watch the procedure video pinned beside it. Contractors can complete their site familiarisation the night before they arrive.

We are vendor-agnostic, so the build follows the learning goal. A 360 walkthrough for inductions and orientation. Laser-scanned, measured environments for technical and engineering training. Lightweight 3D and Gaussian splat outputs for VR and AR delivery.

  • The real place, not a mock-up

Learners rehearse in the exact layout, equipment and routes they will use on the job.

  • Knowledge pinned in place

SOPs, videos, hazard notes and quizzes attached to the asset they describe.

  • Open on any device

Browser, mobile or headset, linked from the learning platform you already use.

01 Induction, onboarding & time to competency

First days are expensive. New starters spend hours being walked around a site, finding their way, and absorbing information they will forget by the end of the week.

A training twin lets them explore the real workplace before they arrive. Key locations, team areas, welfare facilities, emergency routes and first-aid points are tagged and explained in place. Line managers spend less time on orientation and more on the work itself.

In practice

  • Self-guided virtual tours of the site sent with the offer letter or joining pack
  • Tagged points of interest with short videos from the people who work there
  • Guided highlight reels for specific roles, shifts or departments
  • Short knowledge checks linked from your learning platform
  • The same induction for every starter, whoever is on shift that day
Impact · Productive sooner, with less supervisor time
02 Health, safety & emergency preparedness

The most important safety training is often the hardest to deliver on a live site. Drills disrupt operations, hazardous areas cannot be visited casually, and some scenarios cannot be rehearsed for real at all.

Inside the twin, learners walk evacuation routes, locate fire equipment and shut-offs, and identify hazards in the exact environment they will face them. Safety teams can mark confined spaces, permit areas and high-risk zones, and refresh the content as the site changes.

In practice

  • Walk evacuation routes, refuges and assembly points from any device
  • Tag fire alarm call points, extinguishers, spill kits and isolation points
  • Hazard-spotting exercises set in the real working environment
  • Pre-task briefings for high-risk or infrequent work
  • A visual record supporting safety audits and training evidence
Impact · Safer practice, zero operational disruption
03 Equipment, process & technical training

Procedures written in a manual rarely match what a technician sees when they open a plant room door. Learners have to translate a drawing or a photo into the real thing, usually under time pressure.

Twinflow pins standard operating procedures, maintenance steps, data sheets and how-to videos to the exact asset in the model. Engineers can study a piece of kit, rehearse a sequence and check measurements before they ever touch it. For complex plant, laser-scanned environments provide the accuracy technical training needs.

In practice

  • SOPs, isolation sequences and checklists attached to the relevant equipment
  • Video walkthroughs recorded by experienced operators, placed in context
  • Measured environments for maintenance planning and access rehearsal
  • Line changeover and reconfiguration practice without stopping production
  • Links to CAFM, CMMS or asset data where the twin is already in use
Impact · Confidence before contact with live equipment
04 Knowledge capture, transfer & succession

In many organisations the real operating knowledge sits with a handful of experienced people. When they retire or move on, it leaves with them, and the replacement learns the hard way.

A twin gives that knowledge a permanent home. Experts can annotate the spaces they know best, record short explanations in place and flag the quirks no manual mentions. The result is a spatial knowledge base that survives staff turnover and grows over time.

In practice

  • Structured knowledge capture sessions with senior staff before they leave
  • Annotated tips, warnings and workarounds placed where they apply
  • Recorded explanations of rarely performed tasks and seasonal procedures
  • Mentoring sessions run remotely inside the twin
  • A searchable record that new team members can return to at any time
Impact · Expertise that stays when people go
05 Immersive VR, AR & simulation-ready environments

Building immersive training from scratch is slow and costly, and generic 3D environments rarely look like the place learners actually work. That gap undermines the realism that makes immersive learning effective.

Twinflow captures the real space and converts it into formats immersive developers can use, including meshes, lightweight GLB files and photorealistic Gaussian splats. Your learning designers or XR partner start from an accurate replica of your site rather than a blank scene, which saves build time and makes scenarios feel real.

In practice

  • Headset-ready walkthroughs of real sites for immersive inductions
  • Scan-to-mesh and GLB exports for VR, AR and game-engine development
  • Gaussian splat capture for photorealistic, lightweight environments
  • Accurate geometry for scenario-based and branching simulations
  • AR overlays that place guidance on real equipment in the field
Impact · Immersive learning built on the real site
06 Contractor, agency & visitor familiarisation

Contractors and agency staff often lose half a day to induction before they can start. Visitors, auditors and new suppliers arrive unsure where to go or what the rules are.

Sharing the twin in advance covers site rules, access routes, parking, sign-in, permit areas and welfare facilities before anyone arrives. Contractors can also check access and working conditions ahead of the job, which reduces return visits and wasted mobilisations.

In practice

  • Pre-arrival familiarisation sent with permits and work packs
  • Clear marking of restricted areas, PPE zones and access routes
  • Remote pre-start checks of working areas and equipment access
  • Briefings for agency staff covering multiple sites at once
  • Visitor and auditor orientation for complex or secure premises
Impact · Contractors productive from the first hour
07 Campus, classroom & vocational learning

Universities, colleges and training providers face the same constraint as employers: the best learning environments are physical, limited and expensive to access. Labs have capacity limits, workshops have safety rules, and many real-world sites cannot host groups of students.

Twins of labs, workshops, heritage sites and industrial facilities give students repeatable access to places they would otherwise see once, if at all. The same captures support virtual open days, accessibility information and remote learners.

In practice

  • Virtual lab and workshop orientation before practical sessions
  • Virtual field trips to industrial, construction and heritage sites
  • Apprenticeship and T Level content built around real employer sites
  • Virtual open days and accessibility walkthroughs for prospective students
  • Remote and blended learning that uses the same spaces as campus learners
Impact · Real places, open to every learner
08 Multi-site standardisation & training evidence

Organisations with many sites struggle to deliver the same quality of training everywhere. Local trainers improvise, layouts differ, and head office has little visibility of what is actually being taught.

A consistent twin format across every location means each site gets the same structure of induction and safety content, adapted to its own layout. Central L&D teams can update material once, see where training is used and hold a visual record that supports audit and compliance.

In practice

  • A standard training template rolled out across a whole portfolio
  • Site-specific detail layered onto a shared core programme
  • Central updates when policies, layouts or equipment change
  • View analytics showing which spaces and topics learners engage with
  • Recapture when a site changes, so material never drifts out of date
Impact · One standard, every location
05 / How it works

From learning goal to a training environment your people actually use.

STAGE 01
Discover

We start with the learning outcome, not the technology. Which roles, which spaces, which procedures, and how will success be measured? We also map the learning platforms and devices you already use, then agree a focused pilot such as one site induction or one high-risk procedure.

STAGE 02
Capture

Our capture network records the spaces with the right technology for the goal: 360 capture such as Matterport for orientation, mobile and terrestrial LiDAR from NavVis, Leica or FARO for technical environments, and Gaussian splat capture where immersive delivery is planned. Visits are scheduled around shifts and production.

STAGE 03
Build the learning layer

The twin is turned into a learning environment. Procedures, videos, hazard notes, documents and knowledge checks are pinned to the right locations, and guided tours are built for each audience. Where VR or AR is in scope, we prepare mesh, GLB or splat outputs for your learning designers or XR partner.

STAGE 04
Deploy & integrate

Learners access the twin through a secure link, embedded in your learning platform, intranet or onboarding portal, on desktop, mobile or headset. Hosting, access controls and data residency are agreed at scoping, and data ownership and portability are written in from the start.

STAGE 05
Measure & refresh

Usage data shows which spaces and topics learners engage with, so content can be improved. When a layout, process or piece of equipment changes, we recapture the affected area so the training stays true to the real workplace, then extend the programme to further sites and roles.

06 / Return Where the value shows up

Every hour a learner spends in the twin is an hour nobody has to walk them round the site.

Faster time to competency

New starters and contractors arrive already knowing the layout, the routes and the rules, so they contribute sooner.

Less disruption to operations

Orientation, drills and equipment familiarisation move out of the live environment, so production and services keep running.

Safer practice

Hazards, isolations and emergency routes are rehearsed in the real layout before anyone is exposed to the real risk.

Lower delivery cost

Fewer trainer-led site tours, less travel between locations and content that scales to every learner without extra sessions.

Knowledge retained

Expert insight is pinned to the building itself, protecting the organisation against retirement and staff turnover.

One asset, many uses

The same capture supports facilities, compliance, marketing and capital projects, so training never carries the full cost alone.
